Toronto Men’s Shed Inc. is a member of the Australian Men’s Sheds Association (AMSA) which consists of almost 1,200 men’s sheds throughout Australia, with many more being started in other countries as well. The various sheds provide spaces for men of all ages to get together to build and repair things or just a chat over a cuppa.

Our shed began its life in June, 2011 with a meeting of about 30 men at a local church hall. Since October 2011, we had been running for 2 days a week at the old Awaba Community Hall. We are now located in our permanent facility at 16 Nicholson Street, Toronto. The new shed has a commercial dust extraction system and reticulated compressed air. Toronto Men’s Shed has approximately 45 members with around 20 turning up each day we are open.

Available at the shed currently are opportunities for woodwork, metalwork, welding and repairing of motor mowers and line trimmers. We have a fairly wide range of equipment for these tasks ranging from large metal and wood lathes and saws through to various hand tools for those so inclined. Of course, some of our equipment has been donated and this has made it possible for us to have such a wide range on such a limited budget. 

Our shed also encourages members and visitors to bring different skills and start new activities or you may just want to come along and have a cuppa and a chat. We have a computer on site which has an internet connection and we encourage anybody interested to come and use it or educate others in the “mysteries” of the beast.

Along with the activities at the Toronto Men’s Shed, we are encouraging members to become involved with the community around us. At the moment we are doing various projects including grounds maintenance for the Toronto Girl Guides and garden maintenance for some elderly members of the local community. Members have repaired and made items for local schools, scout groups and Coal Point Progress Association.

Besides these activities, we hold regular fundraising BBQ’s. We are always looking for ways to raise money to keep our shed going, so new ideas are always welcome. Our only income comes from our fundraising and applying for grants for various projects so we actively work to fundraise in the community where we can! 

All members are fully insured whilst performing shed activities either at the shed or in the community
